September 18 What is a Sacrament?

Missed Discipleship Formation Session
Make Up Work Grades 6-10

September 18
Title of Lesson: What is a Sacrament?

MAIN IDEAS

  • A sacrament is an e!ective, visible sign that signifies life in the soul. The seven sacraments are categorized as sacraments of initiation, healing, and vocation.
  • Jesus used ordinary objects to signify something extraordinary in all the important stages of life. The Church continues His example in a ritualized way.
  • We receive grace through the sacraments, and grace gives us supernatural strength when
we are weak and draws us closer to God.

SCRIPTURE REFERENCE

“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God.” (Ephesians 2:8)

CATECHISM REFERENCE

“Christ now acts through the sacraments He instituted to communicate His grace. The sacraments are perceptible signs (words and actions) accessible to our human nature. By the action of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit they make present e"caciously the grace that they signify.” (CCC 1084)
