Why is the Eucharist so Important?
MAIN IDEAS
- Eucharist is the real presence of Jesus in the host, given to us sacramentally when we receive Communion. Participating in Mass and worthily receiving Communion are actions of thanksgiving to God. The outward signs of the sacrament are bread and wine, the epiclesis, and the words of consecration.
- Through Eucharist, Jesus becomes part of us, which is why it is known as the Most Blessed Sacrament or the “Sacrament of sacraments.”
- Jesus dwelling within us is a miraculous gift from God that gives us grace, strength, and
healing.
SCRIPTURE REFERENCE
“Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst.’” (John 6:35)
CATECHISM REFERENCE
“The Eucharist is ‘the source and summit of the Christian life. The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch.’” (CCC 1324)
