Can’t I Just Tell My Sins to God?
 (Sacraments of Healing)

MAIN IDEAS

  • When we sin, we damage our communion with God and our communion with the Church.
  • The Sacrament of Reconciliation delivers God’s forgiveness to us through the priest, who
represents the Church. The outward signs of forgiveness are penance, the priest’s raised
hands, and the words of absolution.
    • Telling our sins to Jesus through the priest and hearing the words of forgiveness grant us
      peace and consolation.
  • To be an effective sign of grace, Reconciliation requires three things.
    • 1. First, the person coming to confession (known as a penitent) must feel sorrow for their sins, which the Church calls contrition.
    • 2. Next, the person must honestly confess all their sins to a priest.
    • 3. Finally, the penitent must do penance for their sins, which the priest assigns at the end of their confession.
  • Jesus calls us to conversion and healing because He loves us and wants to be in communion with us.
  • The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is a Sacrament of Healing and primarily heals our soul and forgives the person of any sins. The outward signs of Anointing of the Sick are oil and the laying on of hands.
    • Anointing of the Sick can be given during serious illness when a person is close to death or before major surgery or other medical procedures. It can also provide spiritual graces for those suffering from mental illness or trauma.

SCRIPTURE REFERENCE

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

CATECHISM REFERENCE

“The confession (or disclosure) of sins … frees us and facilitates our reconciliation with others.
Through such an admission man looks squarely at the sins he is guilty of, takes responsibility for
them, and thereby opens himself again to God and to the communion of the Church in order to
make a new future possible.” (CCC 1455)

FAMILY REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  • What did you learn about the healing sacraments?
  • What, if anything, do you remember from your First Reconciliation?
  • The priest is forbidden from sharing any sins he hears during Reconciliation. Why do you think that is?
  • How does the light of Christ act like an X-ray for our souls?
  • A lot of people misunderstand the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. Why do you think that is?
